39th Annual Man Against Horse Race Takes Place October 28th

On Saturday, October 28, 2023 the 39th Annual Man Against Horse Race will take place again and racers are invited to participate.

In 1983 Man Against Horse began with a bar bet on Whiskey Row in Prescott, Arizona between Gheral Brownlow and Cowboy Steve Rafters. Gheral bet Steve he could outrun his horse in race.

Today, this bar bet has turned into a legendary endurance race where runners race in a 50 mile, 25 mile, half marathon against horses and kids can run in a free Kid’s Fun Run (1/4 mile loop).

The 2023 race activities begin on Friday, October 27th with ride packet and runner packet pick up plus vet cheks for horses and the kid’s fun run. Then starting at 5:30 am on October 28th, runners and riders begin to race!

Friday, Oct 27

  • 3:00 pm-6:00 pm:
    • Ride Packet Pickup & Vet Check 25 & 50/Runner packet pick up
  • 5:00 pm
    • Kids Free Fun Run (1/4 mile loop (3:30 pm-4:30 pm Check-In)
  • 7:00 pm
    • Pre-Race Briefing

Saturday, Oct 28

  • 5:30 am-9:00 am: All Races Begin
    • 5:30 am Early Start for runners that plan on 12+ hours (must pre-check in Friday).
    • 6:30 am 50 mi Ride and Run Start
    • 7:30 am 25 mi Ride and Run Start
    • 7:45 am 1/2 Marathon Run Start
    • 9:00 am 1/2 Marathon Ride Start
  • 6:00 pm-7:00 pm
    • Banquet and Awards
  • 7:00 pm: Final Cutoff

The entrance to the race starts on Highway 89A, 3 miles off of Old Fain Road hosted on Fain Land in the north end of Prescott Valley.
